Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has predicted that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will emerge as the largest party in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, he said, the BJP could be prevented from forming a government at the Center by reducing its seat tally and weakening the confidence of its allies in the NDA alliance. Let us tell you that in the 2019 general elections, the BJP-led NDA had won 303 seats and now in the 2024 general elections, the NDA aims to achieve the magical figure of 400.

“BJP will emerge as the largest party, but…”

However, Congress and 27 other opposition parties have formed an alliance to challenge the BJP. Speaking at the Kerala Literature Festival, Tharoor said the BJP’s numbers could be reduced to prevent it from forming the government. According to PTI report, former Union Minister Tharoor said in a session ‘India: The Future Is Now’, “I still hope that BJP will emerge as the largest party. But I believe that their numbers will not be reduced to that level.” “It can be done where their potential allies required to form the government may no longer be willing to cooperate with them and they may become willing to cooperate with us. So we have to try it.” Tharoor said that a preventable defeat could indeed be avoided if the India Bloc secures seat-sharing agreements in enough states.

“Seat sharing between CPI(M) and Congress in Kerala is impossible”

Shashi Tharoor said, “This is the best strategy they (the opposition) can do and if that happens and there is enough difference of opinion, then probably the BJP candidate will win. But this is in our first-past-the-post system.” It’s a democracy.” Tharoor said it was impossible for CPI(M) and Congress to agree on a seat-sharing deal in Kerala. Tharoor said, “In Kerala, it is almost impossible to imagine that the two main rivals of the Indy alliance, i.e. CPI(M) and Congress, would ever agree on seat-sharing, but right next door i.e. in Tamil Nadu, the CPI(M) M), Congress and DMK are all in alliance together and there is no debate, no controversy. They have already fought the last election together. There are chances that they will fight this election too.”

Seat-sharing issue stuck at many places

Let us tell you that India Alliance is discussing seat-sharing in many states. However, in many states it is difficult to reach a compromise between constituent parties because the constituents have been political rivals. Whereas in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee had said that her TMC can only defeat BJP. He indicated that he was against sharing seats in the state. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury later claimed that Mamata’s party had offered only two seats.

Similarly, Congress and AAP are arch rivals in Punjab and Delhi. After the rhetoric against each other, it was indicated that both the parties do not want to share seats. However, after AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal met Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday, both sides have made some progress. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge was on Saturday elected president of the alliance after Nitish Kumar refused to become the convenor of the India alliance.
