Congress report on seat sharing in alliance
Preparations for Lok Sabha elections 2024 have intensified in the new year. Opposition alliance India will finalize seat sharing in the coming days. Meanwhile, the National Alliance Committee of Congress has prepared the report regarding seat sharing. The committee will submit its report to the Congress President. The National Alliance Committee of Congress held intensive discussions with leaders of 9 states where the party will form an alliance for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The committee has made its assessment based on the party’s performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in several states. The party held meetings with its leadership in these 9 states.
Uttar Pradesh
According to sources, many leaders of UP were of the opinion that the party should get a respectable figure of at least 50% seats in the state. However, the committee felt that victory should be the only criteria and decided to look for seats in the alliance that the party had won in 2009 and still has a strong candidate to contest from that seat. Due to many leaders who won the 2009 elections leaving the Congress, the party is not left with strong candidates on many seats, hence the number of seats has come down to 10. Leaders like RPN Singh, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Jitin Prasad, Anu Tandon, Sanjay Singh have left Congress and the party does not have other strong faces on these seats, so the party can ask for more than 10 seats from its alliance partner in UP. On which their faces are strong. Apart from Amethi and Rae Bareli, Congress can demand seats like Jhansi, where Pradeep Jain is their leader, who had won in 2009. The Congress in Varanasi believes that state PCC president Ajay Rai would be a good choice. Imran Masood from Saharanpur, social media in-charge Supriya Shrinet from Maharajganj, Pratapgarh is another seat as the party’s deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari comes from this seat. Apart from seats like Faizabad, Lakhimpur, Lucknow, Sultanpur, there are some other seats that Congress can demand from its alliance partners.
West Bengal
The party has not yet decided on whether to form an alliance with the Left or TMC in West Bengal, but the Congress believes it will have to at least get a nod from the two sitting MPs in Behrampur and South Malda in West Bengal. 6 seats should be given. The Congress is now looking to contest both North and South Malda seats, apart from seats like Darjeeling and Purulia, which were won by the BJP in the last elections. Also from Raiganj, from where Congress wants to field Deepadas Munshi.
Delhi
Some leaders from Delhi believed that Congress should contest the seats bordering Haryana and UP, however, there were some leaders who believed that the party should look for all such seats where they have strong faces. , Congress will ask for either 3 or 4 seats in Delhi. Seats like South Delhi, East Delhi, Outer Delhi and New Delhi.
Bihar
Congress will be seeking all the 9 seats which it had contested in the last election.
Jharkhand
In Jharkhand, Congress will demand the seats on which it had contested in the last elections. Jharkhand-Hazaribagh, Ranchi, Dhanbad Khunti, Jamshedpur, Chatra, Palamu, Singhbhum, Lohardaga are the seats on which Congress would like to field its candidates. At the same time, RJD is also demanding seats like Chatra and Palamu.
Punjab
Congress will demand all the 8 seats which it won last time.
Maharashtra
Maharashtra is the only state where there has been a new formation with the split in SS and NCP, so the party believes that no previous election can be the basis for seat sharing. However, Congress wants to contest at least 20 seats in the state.
The National Alliance Committee has understood the state leadership’s point and will convey this to the party president and then the party will start talks with its alliance partners and aims to complete the alliance talks by the end of the first week of January.
