Cyclone alert.
Chennai: The low pressure area over the south-west Bay of Bengal will strengthen into a cyclonic storm on December 3, resulting in heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the coastal districts and interior parts of Tamil Nadu. This information was given by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday. There was heavy rain in the metropolis and its surrounding districts late Saturday night. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that after the forecast of heavy rain during the next two days, ministers, MPs, MLAs and local body members should help people in the concerned areas.
Alert from 3rd to 7th December
Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena reviewed the precautionary measures with senior officials here. South Central Railway announced cancellation of 118 long distance trains from December 3 to 7 due to cyclone ‘Michong’. The IMD in its latest bulletin said that the cyclone will reach West Central Bay of Bengal near South Andhra Pradesh and adjoining North Tamil Nadu coasts by the morning of December 4. The IMD said it will then move northwards and move parallel to the south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam on Tuesday forenoon.
Winds will blow at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour
Due to this cyclonic activity, wind can blow at a speed of 80-90 kilometers per hour to 100 kilometers per hour. According to S Balachandran, Deputy Director of the Regional Meteorological Center here, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely in Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Chengalpattu, Villuparam and Cuddalore districts. From the night of December 2 to December 4, wind speed of 60-70 km per hour gusting to 80 km per hour may occur in South West Bay of Bengal.
