Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government on Monday approved an ordinance aimed at cracking down on rioters. Under this, if there is damage to public property, the culprits will be compensated. Chief Secretary Radha Raturi told reporters that in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, it was decided to bring Uttarakhand Public and Private Property Damage Recovery Ordinance-2024. Officials said that apart from recovering the full amount of damage caused to private and government property from the rioters, a fine of up to Rs 8 lakh will also be imposed on them. Not only this, the expenses incurred on government staff and other works to control the riots will also be reimbursed.
Ordinance sent to the Governor
The ordinance has been sent to the Governor for approval. Once approved by the Governor, this ordinance will become one of the strictest anti-riot laws in the country. The government has taken this decision about a month after the incidents of stone pelting, arson and firing in Haldwani, in which 6 people were killed and more than 100 were injured. Several vehicles and a police station were set on fire during the violence that broke out over the demolition of an illegal madrassa in Haldwani’s Banbhulpura area.

Soon after the decision was taken in the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami wrote on social media platform ‘X’, “Those who disturb peace in the state will now have to pay the price.” He said that the formation of a special tribunal has been approved during the cabinet meeting today with the aim of strictly curbing the cases of riots and unrest. The Chief Minister said that “damage to public property caused during the riots will be compensated by the rioters themselves.”
