Chennai: Bengaluru’s 36th City Civil Court on Monday announced that it will hand over 27 kg of gold and diamond jewelery belonging to late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to the state Home Secretary on March 6 and 7 this year. The final judicial process of selling his properties is underway to raise the fine of Rs 100 crore imposed on him. The move comes nearly 10 years after Jayalalitha was convicted and sentenced to four years’ imprisonment in a corruption case and more than seven years after her death.

The current proceedings of the special court are for the auction of movable and immovable properties of Jayalalithaa. After the jewelery is auctioned, the court will bring her immovable property up for auction. While 20 kg of jewelery will be sold or auctioned to recover the fine, 7 kg of jewelery will be exempted as it will be considered inherited from her mother. On its part, Canfin Homes Ltd, where Jayalalitha had an account, handed over around Rs 60 lakh to a special court in Bengaluru on Monday.

Gold and diamond jewelery will compensate

Special Judge Mohan passed a brief order recording the fact that as per his earlier direction, the Tamil Nadu government had issued a GO on February 16 in which the state Home Secretary and a police officer of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) The Inspector General was authorized to come to the Bengaluru Court and receive gold and diamond jewellery.

The judge said officials would have to bring “a photographer and videographer and six large trunks with necessary security to collect the jewelery from this court”. He further said, “Furthermore, the Registrar of the City Civil Court is directed to make necessary security arrangements with the local police during those two days for the purpose of handing over the jewels to the State of Tamil Nadu.”

Jayalalitha was fined Rs 100 crore

Let us tell you that in September 2014, Special Judge John Michael D’Cunha, in a 1,136-page verdict, had convicted Jayalalithaa, N Sasikala, J Ilavarasi and VN Sudhakaran and sentenced all of them to four years imprisonment. A fine of Rs 100 crore was imposed on Jayalalitha and Rs 10 crore each on the remaining three. Although the Karnataka High Court acquitted them all on May 11, 2015, the Supreme Court reinstated Judge D’Cunha’s order on February 14, 2017. Since Jayalalithaa had died by then, the top court said the charges against them would be dropped, but the other three had to serve four years’ imprisonment and pay fines.
