Guru Nanak Jayanti today, know why it is called ‘Prakash Parv’

New Delhi: Today, Prakash Parv is celebrated across the country. Today Guru Nanak Jayanti is being celebrated on the day of Kartik Purnima. The birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Saheb is celebrated as Prakash Parv. In such a situation, this time Prakash Parv is being celebrated today i.e. on 27th November. This day holds special significance for the Sikh community. On this day, people of Sikh community perform bhajan-kirtan and morning processions are also taken out. On the auspicious occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, special splendor is seen in all the Gurudwaras across the country. People go to the Gurudwara and recite prayers. On this day the Gurudwara is decorated with colorful lights and flowers. Guru Nanak Jayanti is also known as Guru Purab and Prakash Parv.

Let us tell you that Prakash Parv is celebrated every year on the day of Kartik Purnima. It is said that the first Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Sahib, was born on this day, on the full moon day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Guru Nanak Dev’s father’s name was Kalyan Chand and mother’s name was Tripta. He was born in Talwandi which is currently in Pakistan. He was born on 15 April 1469. His birthplace is also known as Nankana Sahib. This place is considered very sacred for the people of Sikh community. Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated every year on Kartik Purnima. Dev Diwali is also celebrated on this day. Varanasi is completely decorated for Dev Diwali.

What is Prakash Parv?

According to beliefs, Guru Nanak ji had laid the foundation of Sikhism, hence he is considered the first Guru of the Sikhs. It was Nanak ji who wrote the sacred words ‘Ik Omkar’. This Guruvani has great importance for Sikhs. Let us tell you that this year Guru Nanak Jayanti is being celebrated on 27th November. Guru Nanak Ji was a saint, guru and social reformer. He had dedicated his life to the society. Since childhood, he used to spend most of his time in contemplation. He had no worldly attachments. Along with this, he gave sermons to eradicate casteism and to bind people in unity. Nanak ji had worked to spread the light of knowledge in the society, that is why Guru Nanak Jayanti is also celebrated as the festival of lights.
