Opposition to the removal of Sunehri Bagh Mosque located in Lutyens Zone of the capital Delhi is intensifying. A proposal to remove the mosque has been brought by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to relieve the traffic jam. However, this decision of NDMC has been challenged in the Delhi High Court by political circles and the mosque administration. News has come that Delhi High Court is going to hear the Sunhari Bagh Masjid case on January 11. Let us know what is the history of Sunehri Bagh Mosque and what is the reason for the demand and protest to remove this mosque.

The mosque is more than 150 years old

Sunehri Bagh Masjid is located near the Central Secretariat in Motilal Nehru Marg, Rajpath area in Lutyens Zone. It is claimed that this mosque is more than 150 years old. According to reports, in the map of Delhi of the year 1912, this mosque has been shown as Hakim Ji Ka Bagh. Now it is known as Sunehri Bagh. Those opposing the removal of the mosque claim that this mosque was built during the Mughal period, which is a beautiful example of the architecture of that time.

What is the logic behind removing the mosque?

The New Delhi Municipal Council had issued a notice on December 24, in which it was proposed to remove the Lutyens Sunehri Bagh Mosque, the VIP area of Delhi. It has been argued that there is a lot of traffic at Sunehri Bagh roundabout. There is a metro station nearby and convoys of VIPs also pass through here. In such a situation, security related problems also arise here. When Delhi was being built during the British era, there was no traffic here. For this reason, this mosque was not disturbed even then. However, today there is a huge problem of traffic here.

NDMC received more than 2000 suggestions

The New Delhi Municipal Council has received over 2,000 comments and suggestions regarding the demolition of the Sunehri Masjid. NDMC had sought feedback and suggestions from the public on this exercise till January 1. NDMC sources said- “We have received more than 2,000 suggestions on e-mail. These suggestions have been received from Muslim organizations and minority welfare bodies. The suggestions from the public will be taken into consideration and the heritage committee will also consider it.”

Why is there protest?

AIMIM party MP Asaduddin Owaisi had written a letter to NDMC opposing the proposal to remove Sunehri Masjid. He had said that this mosque has historical importance and removing it would harm India’s heritage. At the same time, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind President Maulana Mahmood Madani has also written a letter to PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the mosque. The supporters of the mosque also claim that Sunehri Bagh Mosque is included in the heritage list and the entire intersection is also heritage.
