Supreme Court sent notice to ED on Sanjay Singh’s petition

Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday heard a plea challenging the arrest and remand of Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh in a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi liquor scam case. The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Center and the Enforcement Directorate, ED in this case and has sought their response regarding the arrest. The Supreme Court bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti sought response from the Center and ED regarding Sanjay Singh’s arrest plea by December 11, 2023.

The bench ordered that if Sanjay Singh files a plea for interim bail, it should be considered independent of the observation made in the October 20 judgment of the Delhi High Court. AAP leader Sanjay Singh has been booked by ED in the Delhi Excise Policy case. He was arrested in October and he had approached the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the Delhi High Court.

Delhi High Court had said this

The high court, in its earlier order, had refused to interfere in his arrest in the case and had said it could not allege political motive on a key investigating agency in the absence of material on record. The ED is building a case against Sanjay Singh and several other accused based on the investigation initiated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR.

According to the CBI and ED, irregularities were committed while revising the now-expired Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 and undue benefits were extended to license holders. Singh was remanded to ED custody after investigation said he had played a key role in the formulation and implementation of the policy, which has become a bone of contention and political war for the AAP government.
