Conspiracy to kidnap a girl child.
Kollam: Kerala Police has arrested an accused, his wife and their YouTuber daughter in connection with the kidnapping of a six-year-old girl and demanding ransom of Rs 10 lakh earlier this week. Police have claimed that the arrested family was deep in debt. He wanted to earn money quickly, that is why he carried out this incident. When people came to know about this incident, the accused abandoned the girl in a field in Kollam. Police said that engineering graduate Padmakumar, his wife Anita Kumari and YouTuber daughter Anupama Padman have been detained on the basis of scientific, digital and circumstantial evidence.
Voice recognized while demanding ransom
Additional Director General of Police MR Ajit Kumar said that during the ransom conversation, people recognized the voice of one of the accused. The information given by him played an important role in arresting the accused. This kidnapping incident, which came to light earlier this week, had attracted people’s attention. The kidnappers had abandoned the girl in a field in Kollam district. According to the police, the reason behind this kidnapping was allegedly the financial condition of this family. Ajit Kumar told reporters outside Puyappalli police station that the kidnapping was meticulously planned. The accused were planning this crime for the last one year and were looking for a suitable child to kidnap. This case has been registered in this police station.
Couldn’t arrange money so took this step
Padmakumar had tried his hand at several businesses, including a local cable TV network, but was said to be in a prolonged financial crisis after Covid. The police officer said that as per his statement he had a debt of more than Rs 5 crore. He urgently needed Rs 10 lakh due to which this family committed this crime. The accused claimed that he was influenced by stories of other people who had made easy money through similar crimes. The senior officer said that as part of his efforts to execute the kidnapping plan, he made two fake number plates for his car. Police suspect that Anita Kumari might have suggested the kidnapping.
Kidnapping attempt was made earlier also
The Additional Director General of Police said that the accused had tried to kidnap the girl twice before but they could not succeed because the girl was with her mother and grandmother. He said that 20-year-old Anupama was earning a good income from social media but some time back, that earning had stopped due to technical reasons, after which the family was inspired to think of some other easy way of earning money. Earlier, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had confirmed significant progress in the investigation. Vijayan had told reporters here that the main accused were in police custody. Vijayan praised the police for arresting the accused. He said that the police conducted an excellent investigation in the case which helped in taking the accused into custody in a short time. The Chief Minister also condemned the opposition Congress for criticizing the police regarding its investigation into the incident.
