INDI alliance nominates former JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmed as Rajya Sabha candidate – India TV Hindi

Opposition alliance ‘India’ has made former Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLA Sarfaraz Ahmed its candidate for the elections for the Rajya Sabha seat of the state. Party spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya gave this information on Sunday. Ahmed will file his nomination on March 11. Ahmed’s candidature was announced after a meeting held at the Chief Minister’s residence. Chief Minister Champai Soren and senior Congress leaders attended this meeting.

BJP is sending Pradeep Verma to Rajya Sabha

Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday had declared the party’s Jharkhand unit general secretary Pradeep Verma as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections. An official said that the biennial elections for two Rajya Sabha seats of Jharkhand will be held on March 21. The tenure of current Rajya Sabha members Sameer Oraon of BJP and Dheeraj Prasad Sahu of Congress is going to end on May 3. Fresh elections will be required to fill these vacancies.

Congress calls BJP candidate an ‘outsider’

Let us tell you that according to the current strength of 81-member Jharkhand Assembly, the ruling alliance led by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is likely to get one seat in the Rajya Sabha elections and the opposition is likely to get one seat. Now the ruling JMM-Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) alliance has announced its candidate on Sunday. On Saturday, Jharkhand Congress President Rajesh Thakur had said that our candidate will be 100 percent Jharkhandi and BJP’s Rajya Sabha candidate is from Uttar Pradesh.

Resigned from the assembly last year

It is noteworthy that Sarfaraz Ahmed had resigned from Jharkhand Assembly on December 31 last year. He had also purchased nomination papers on Thursday. The election officer said that the process of filing nomination papers started on March 4 and its last date is March 11. The last date for withdrawal of names is March 14.

There are total 6 Rajya Sabha seats from Jharkhand. The ruling alliance has 47 MLAs in the state assembly, including 29 from JMM, 17 from Congress and one from RJD. BJP has 26 MLAs and All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) party has three MLAs. Apart from two independent MLAs, there is one MLA each from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist). There is also a nominated member.
