Jharkhand Police issued summons to ED officers

Ranchi: Jharkhand Police has sent summons to the concerned officials in the SC-ST case filed against ED officers on behalf of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. ED officers have been asked to be present at the police station at 11 am on March 21. Soren had accused the ED officers of harassing and humiliating the entire community.

Summons sent to these officers

The officers who have been summoned include ED Additional Director Kapil Raj, Assistant Director Devvrat Jha along with Anupam Kumar and Aman Patel. ED officer Kapil Raj is looking into both the Delhi Excise scam and Hemant Soren case.

Know the whole matter

The summons were issued a week after the Jharkhand High Court directed the police not to take any coercive action against ED officials. Senior Superintendent of Police (Ranchi) Chandan Kumar Sinha confirmed the summons had been issued, but refused to share further details. Soren had filed the case on January 31, the day the federal agency arrested him over alleged land irregularities.

ED gave this argument in the High Court

The ED challenged the First Information Report (FIR) against its officials under the stringent Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on the grounds of jurisdiction, intent and application of law. It was argued that the Act does not apply to persons performing official duties. In the FIR, Soren alleged that the ED searched his residence in Delhi to harass and defame him and his tribal community. He said this was done deliberately as the ED officer was from a non-tribal community. At present Hemant Soren is still in jail.
