Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday decided to hand over the investigation into the recent death of a student at a veterinary university in the state to the CBI. According to a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the father and relatives of 20-year-old student Siddharthan JS came to meet Vijayan and demanded that the investigation be handed over to the CBI. According to the statement, the Chief Minister told them (the student’s father and relatives) that the police was investigating the case impartially and all the accused had already been arrested.

The statement said that since the mother of the deceased had also filed a petition to hand over the investigation of the case to the CBI, Vijayan told the family that out of respect for their sentiments, he has decided to hand over the investigation of the case to the CBI. The statement was issued by the Chief Minister’s Office after the father of the deceased told reporters here that Vijayan had assured him that the case would be handed over to the CBI if necessary.

What is the whole matter?

The father of the deceased student said that he met the Chief Minister today and demanded a CBI investigation into his son’s death. Siddharthan was found hanging inside the college hostel toilet on February 18. The father of the deceased also said that he told Vijayan that as per the post mortem report, considering the injuries sustained by his son, many doctors had said that Siddharthan could not even stand on his own to hang himself. “Therefore I told the Chief Minister that my son has been murdered and it is not a case of suicide,” he said. It was told that the accused students started beating Siddharthan at around 9 pm on February 16 and continued beating him till 2 am. Police have registered sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 306 (abetment of suicide) against 18 accused in the case. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Prohibition of Ragging Act. Siddharthan was a second year student of Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry course.
