Bastar: Bastar seat is also one of the 11 Lok Sabha seats of Chhattisgarh. A total of 8 assembly seats come under Bastar Lok Sabha constituency. These include Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Bastar, Jagdalpur, Chitrakoot, Dantewada, Bijapur and Konta assembly seats. Out of these, BJP has captured 5 seats, while Congress has won 3 seats. The political equations of Bastar seat, which was considered a traditional seat of Congress since independence, have changed and now this seat has slipped from the hands of Congress. There is a population of about 22 lakhs in Bastar region. The main issue here is to free this area from the influence of Naxalites. Apart from this, even today there are many areas of Bastar where people are not able to get even basic facilities.

2014 election and its equations

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Chhattisgarh was divided into three phases. Voting took place in the first phase on Bastar Lok Sabha seat. Voting took place in Bastar on 10 April 2014 under the first phase. In this election, while BJP fielded Dinesh Kashyap, Congress made Deepak Karma its candidate. In the counting of votes held across the country on May 16, 2014, while on one hand BJP got absolute majority, on the other hand in Bastar also the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate hoisted its flag. Here BJP candidate Dinesh Kashyap got 385829 votes while Congress candidate Deepak Karma got 261470 votes.

2019 election and its equations

In the Lok Sabha elections 2019 also, voting was conducted in three phases in Chhattisgarh. Voting for Bastar Lok Sabha seat was held in the first phase on 11 April 2019. In this election, BJP gave ticket to Baidu Ram Kashyap in place of Dinesh Kashyap, while Congress also expressed confidence in Deepak Baij. At the same time, Congress made a major reshuffle in this election. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which had held this seat for six consecutive terms, was defeated by the Congress in this election. While Congress candidate Deepak Baij got 402527 votes, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Baidu Ram Kashyap had to face defeat with 363545 votes.

What does the politics of Bastar seat say?

Bastar Lok Sabha seat has seen continuous ups and downs since independence. The elections were held for the first time in 1952 where independent candidate Muchaki Kosa won. So in the 1957 elections, Congress won. In the next three elections, 1962, 1967 and 1971, Congress had to face defeat from independent candidates, while in 1977, Bharatiya Lok Dal candidate Rigpal Shah Kesari Shah defeated the Congress. Decades later, in 1980, Congress candidate Laxman Karma led the Congress to victory. After this, Congress won in 1984, 1889 and 1991 also. Once in 1996, independent candidate Mahendra Karma defeated Congress. BJP won this seat for the first time in 1998 and then held this seat till 2014. However, in the 2019 elections, once again Congress candidate Deepak Baij won the Bastar seat.
