In the year 2019, the last phase of voting was held on May 19 for Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat. There was 69.36 percent voting here. BJP candidate Sunny Deol defeated Sunil Jakhar of Congress by 82459 votes. Sunny Deol got 5,58,719 votes while Sunil Jakhar got 4,76,260 votes. Whereas, in the 2014 elections, BJP’s Vinod Khanna defeated Congress’s Pratap Singh Bajwa by 1,36,065 votes. However, due to the death of Vinod Khanna, by-election was held on this seat in 2017 and Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar defeated BJP’s Savarna Singh Salaria by a margin of 1,93,219 votes.

There are more than 16 lakh voters in Gurdaspur seat. Of these, male voters are 8 lakh 50 thousand, while the number of female voters is around 7 lakh 50 thousand. The number of Hindu and Sikh communities in Gurdaspur seat is almost equal. BJP is considered strong on this seat for a long time. The party would like to maintain its victory here this time too.

When were the elections held in the year 2019?

The Election Commission had announced the dates for the Lok Sabha elections on March 10, 2019. The Election Commission had announced that the 2019 elections would be conducted in 7 phases. These elections ran from 11 April to 19 May. The counting of votes took place on 23 May. Whereas in the year 2014, elections were held from 7 April to 12 May. The results were released on 16 May.
