Who was M Cariappa, the first Field Marshal of independent India?

This day is special because on this day in the year 1949, Field Marshal KM Cariappa was given the command of the Indian Army for the first time. Who was M Cariappa?

Cariappa was born in the year 1899 in Coorg, Karnataka. He joined the army at the age of just 20. Although at that time he was part of the British Indian Army. When the Japanese were defeated in Burma in the Second World War, Cariappa was also awarded the Order of the British Empire for this. Cariappa led the western border in the Indo-Pak war of 1947. Cariappa was appointed as second lieutenant in the Rajput Regiment of the Indian-British Army. His early education was from Madikeri Central High School.

Appointment to the post of Second Lieutenant

Let us tell you that he completed his further studies from Madras Presidency College. Let us tell you that after completing his studies, Cariappa was selected in the Army Training School located in Indore. After completing his school training, he was commissioned in the army in the year 1919. After this, his first appointment was on the post of Second Lieutenant. Let us tell you that M Cariappa was the first Field Marshal of independent India, who was appointed the Chief of the Indian Army on 15 January 1949. On this day the Indian officer got the post of Commander in Chief. Let us tell you that earlier only British officers used to hold this post. But for the first time on 15 January 1949, an Indian was appointed to the post of Commander in Chief of the Indian Army.
