New Delhi: The Corona virus which brought the entire world to a standstill has started spreading again. New cases of Covid-19 have started appearing. During this time, another new sub-variant of Corona has also arrived. The number of patients and dead is increasing. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization has reported that the number of new Covid cases has increased by 52 per cent over the past four weeks, with more than 850,000 new cases reported during the period. The WHO reported that the number of new deaths declined by 8 percent compared to the previous 28-day period, with more than 3,000 new deaths recorded.

More than seven million people have died so far

WHO said that as of 17 December 2023, more than 772 million confirmed cases and nearly seven million deaths have been recorded globally since the onset of COVID-19. Additionally, WHO said there have been more than 118,000 new Covid-19 hospitalizations and more than 1,600 patients admitted to ICU, an overall increase of 23 per cent and 51 per cent respectively globally. As of December 18, 2023, JN.1, a sub-lineage of the BA.2.86 Omicron variant, has been designated a separate variant of interest (VOI) in addition to its parent lineage BA.2.86 due to the rapid increase in its prevalence in recent weeks. Fear of increasing respiratory disease

Due to its rapidly increasing spread, WHO is classifying variant JN.1 as a variant of interest (VOI) separate from the parent lineage BA.2.86. It was previously classified as a VOI as part of the BA.2.86 sublineage. Based on available evidence, the additional global public health risk posed by JN.1 is currently considered low. Nevertheless, with the onset of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, JN.1 may increase the burden of respiratory infections in many countries.

We are monitoring the situation – WHO

WHO previously said it was continuously monitoring the evidence and would update the JN.1 risk assessment as necessary. It said current vaccines continue to protect against severe disease and death from JN.1 and other circulating variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. COVID-19 is not the only respiratory disease spreading. Influenza, RSV and common childhood pneumonia are also on the rise.
