PM Modi will do road show in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

Coimbatore: After the announcement of Lok Sabha elections, all the parties have started their preparations in full swing. BJP is trying to make inroads in South India. This evening PM Modi will also hold a road show in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. This is his first political participation in the state after the announcement of the seven-phase Lok Sabha election schedule.

Both the NDA and INDI alliance have not yet announced their candidates for this seat. Let us inform you that BJP had contested the general elections in the state in alliance with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and did not get any seat in 2019. In September 2023, the two parted ways, leaving the BJP to contest elections with smaller parties like the Tamil Nadu Congress.

New enthusiasm in BJP under the leadership of Annamalai

The BJP is making inroads in Tamil Nadu with a renewed vigor under the leadership of its state unit president K Annamalai. According to experts, the opportunity the BJP has taken in Tamil Nadu to contest the elections alone with smaller parties could help it win about 5 seats in the triangular contest against the DMK-led INDI alliance and the opposition AIADMK in the state.

Why is Coimbatore important for BJP?

In the last two Lok Sabha elections, BJP had got almost a third of the votes in Coimbatore, but in 2014 it came relatively close to AIADMK when there was a triangular contest.

Coimbatore had seen widespread violence in 2016 after incidents of stone pelting were reported at several mosques and churches following the murder of Hindu Munnani spokesperson C Sasikumar. The NIA had named members of now-banned extremist organization Popular Front of India (PFI) as accused in its charge sheet.

In 1998, during the visit of BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani to Coimbatore, more than 55 people lost their lives in several bomb blasts. Subsequently, local BJP leader CP Radhakrishnan was elected to the Lok Sabha twice in 1998 and 1999. However, he failed to retain his seat since 2004. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he lost to CPIM’s PR Natarajan.

In the 2021 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, BJP candidate and Mahila Morcha president Vanathi Srinivasan defeated actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan in a close contest in the Coimbatore South constituency. The contest was between Haasan, Srinivasan and Mayura Jayakumar of Congress.

To avoid division of votes, INDI alliance can field only one candidate from this seat, while BJP is making every effort to win this seat once again. In the 2021 assembly elections (234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly), BJP has a total of four MLAs, including one from Coimbatore.
