ISRO successfully launches Cartosat-2 into Earth’s atmosphere

Bengaluru: The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has successfully dropped the Cartosat-2 satellite, launched 17 years ago, into the Earth’s atmosphere from space. On 14 February 2024, this satellite entered the Earth’s atmosphere and fell in the Indian Ocean. An official of the space agency gave this information on Friday. The satellite entered the Earth’s atmosphere over the Indian Ocean at 3.48 pm Indian time on February 14, the official said. Either it must have been burnt or its remaining part must have fallen into the sea, which we will not be able to find.

When was the satellite launched?

According to ISRO, the satellite was launched on 10 January 2007 to take high-resolution images of the country. With this, roads can be built, maps can be made and other development work can be done. At the time of launch, it weighed 680 kg and was operating in a sun-synchronous polar orbit at an altitude of 635 km. This satellite was entered into the atmosphere in a controlled manner so that the garbage spreads less and it does not cause any harm to anyone.

It was expected to fall in 30 years but scientists did not agree

“Initially, Cartosat-2 was expected to take about 30 years for a natural descent,” the space agency said. However, ISRO chose to reduce its circumference by using leftover fuel to comply with international guidelines on reducing space debris.

ISRO said that following the recommendations of organizations like the United Nations Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC), the satellite was safely brought into the Earth’s orbit and has now been destroyed. (Language)
