Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has given important instructions related to temples.

Madurai: The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Hindu Religion and Charitable Endowments Department of the Tamil Nadu government to put up boards in all Hindu temples stating that non-Hindus are not allowed to go beyond the ‘Kodimaram’ (flagpole) area in the temples. The court said that Hindus also have the right to believe and follow their religion. Justice S. of Madurai Bench of High Court. Shrimati gave this decision while hearing the petition of D. Senthil Kumar.

High Court had accepted Senthil Kumar’s petition

Senthil Kumar had sought a direction to the respondents to allow only Hindus to visit the Arulmigu Palani Dhanadayuthapani Swamy temple and its sub-temples. He had also requested instructions to install boards in this regard at all the entrances of the temples. Lord Murugan Temple is located at Palani in Dindigul district. Accepting the petition, the court directed the defendants to put up boards at the entrance of the temples, near the flagpole and at prominent places in the temple, in which it is written that ‘non-Hindus are not allowed to go beyond Kodimaram inside the temple.’

‘The temple is not a picnic spot or tourist spot’

The court said, ‘It is directed that those people who do not believe in Hindu religion should not be allowed to go ahead of Kodimaram. If a non-Hindu asks for darshan of a particular deity, the authorities will have to take an affidavit from the person that he has faith in the deity and will follow the customs and practices of Hinduism.’ The court said that with such an undertaking the non-Hindus can be allowed to enter the temple. The court directed that all these things will be recorded in the register maintained by the temple authorities.
