Bongaigaon/Guwahati: Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s troubles may increase. Assam Police will issue summons to Rahul Gandhi for the violence during Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma on Tuesday said the state police will issue summons to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the violence during the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in Guwahati. Sharma said the police would send a notice after the Lok Sabha elections and Gandhi would have to appear before the police in person.

Summons will be issued for breaking the law

“When someone breaks the law, obviously summons will be issued,” he told reporters after an official ceremony here. The summons will go to Rahul Gandhi and he will have to stand here after the Lok Sabha elections. Sharma said the summons issued to Congress MLA Zakir Hussain Sikdar and Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Bora is the ‘beginning’ of the process. The Chief Minister was referring to the case registered by Guwahati Police after Congress workers broke barricades while trying to pass through main roads inside the city during the ‘Nyaya Yatra’ in January.

Other Congress leaders also summoned

The CID had issued preliminary notices to Sikdar and the party’s Guwahati city general secretary Raman Kumar Sharma and both of them have already been questioned by the police. Later it also summoned Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Debabrata Saikia and Bora, but both of them did not appear on the scheduled date. A senior police officer, on condition of anonymity, said, “We have issued notices to both of them for the second time. Saikia has been asked to appear before us on March 6, while Bora has been asked to appear before us on March 7.” Reacting to the fresh summons, Bora said that he will not be able to appear before us on Thursday as that The day is his father’s death anniversary and besides, there is also a meeting of his party regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

KC Venugopal, Jitendra Singh, Jairam Ramesh also named in FIR

“In Guwahati, 2,745 cases were reported in the same year,” he said. But the police cannot investigate and solve them because for them the biggest culprit is Bhupen Bora,” he said in an apparent reference to former Assam Congress working president Rana Goswami. “Earlier, other Congress leaders Notices were also issued to him for his alleged role in the violence during the yatra, but everything calmed down after he joined BJP. However, I am not going to join BJP.” Goswami has recently joined the ruling party. The names of many other senior Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, Jitendra Singh, Jairam Ramesh, Srinivas Biwi, Kanhaiya Kumar, Gaurav Gogoi, Bhupen Kumar Bora and Debabrata Saikia are also in the FIR in the barricade breaking case.
