A good news came on Monday. Eight former Indian Navy officers, who were serving life imprisonment in Qatar on espionage charges, returned to their country. Seven of them returned to India on Monday morning, while Commander Purnendu Tiwari, who has been released, remains in Qatar to complete some legal formalities. After coming out of the airport in Delhi, these former Navy officers raised slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’.

In fact, these people were not sure that they would ever be able to return to their homes. All of them previously worked in a private company that provided training to Qatar’s navy but were arrested on charges of espionage and sentenced to death. Although his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after the intervention of the Government of India, the government continued efforts for his release.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself spoke to the Emir of Qatar. After this the Qatar government agreed to send back seven Indians. When these people came out of Delhi airport on Monday, the first thing they thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for. Everyone said the same thing that if Prime Minister Modi had not intervened in this matter and had not taken personal interest, his release would not have been possible.

Considering the kind of charges against the former Navy officers and the kind of evidence on the basis of which they were given death sentence, it is a big deal to get their sentence waived, get them released and brought back to India. No one could have done this work except Narendra Modi.

Modi’s personal relationship with the Emir of Qatar came in handy. The impact of India’s growing reputation in the world in the last few years was also visible on this decision. Now Modi himself will go to Qatar to thank him for this friendly step. Modi will inaugurate the BAPS temple built in Abu Dhabi on 14 February. After this, the next day he will visit Qatar and meet the Emir of Qatar. This is a slap on the face of those people who were challenging Narendra Modi on this issue for the last several days and were trying to instigate public sentiments on this issue. (Rajat Sharma)
