The women said that this trend has been going on for years, the people of Sandeshkhali had accepted these atrocities of Shahjahan as their destiny.
The women said that when they felt that it would be better to die than live a life of humiliation, they gathered courage and raised their voice against Shahjahan, but from the attitude of the Bengal government, it does not seem that they will get justice. Many of the women who spoke to India TV did not hide their faces but the way they expressed their pain against the government, the police and Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan. The women were saying that in Sandeshkhali, Shahjahan’s people call and rape them to give money for government schemes. These women were also taking the names of two of Shahjahan’s henchmen, Uttam Sardar and Shibu Hazra. Sandeshkhali is just 75 kilometers away from Kolkata. Basirhat subdivision of North Twenty-four Parganas district has two blocks, Sandeshkhali-1 and Sandeshkhali-2. Sandeshkhali-2 is on this side of the Kalindi river and Sandeshkhali-1 is on the other side of the river. Sandeshkhali-1 Block is a kind of island. When the matter was raised in the Assembly, BJP leaders started insisting on going to Sandeshkhali, many teams arrived from Delhi, then the police took action on some complaints of land encroachment and arrested a total of 17 people including Uttam Sardar and Shibu Hazra. But the women of Sandeshkhali say that until Shahjahan Sheikh is caught, the reign of terror will continue. The people of Sandeshkhali are speaking openly today because the High Court has adopted a strict stance. Calcutta High Court removed Section 144 imposed in Sandeshkhali, allowed BJP leaders Subhendu Adhikari and Shankar Ghosh to go to Sandeshkhali, when the government tried to stop them again, they sat on strike. Mamata Banerjee’s government appealed to the Division Bench of the High Court, but when things did not work out there too, under compulsion, Shubhendu Adhikari was allowed to leave Sandeshkhali. As soon as Subhendu Adhikari reached Sandeshkhali, the people there welcomed him, flowers were showered on Shubhendu, the women of Sandeshkhali showered flowers on him. Shubhendu Adhikari roamed around the entire Sandeshkhali and talked to the people and women there.
CPI-M leader Vrinda Karat also reached Sandeshkhali, met the women, heard their stories of atrocities committed against them.
