Chennai: Ultimately Senthil Bala ji resigned as cabinet minister. He was arrested by ED 8 months ago in a money laundering case. Balaji has sent his resignation to the Governor of Tamil Nadu. Earlier on Wednesday, a sessions court of Tamil Nadu had extended the remand of Minister V Senthil Balaji till February 15. The prosecution had produced Senthil Balaji in the court of the Principal Sessions Judge through video-conference from the Central Prison here.

Originally, the judge had pushed the case forward to frame charges against Senthil Balaji on January 11. However, when the case came up for hearing that day, senior advocate S Prabhakaran, appearing for Balaji, informed the court that Balaji had filed a petition to adjourn the trial. The judge adjourned the case to January 29 after special public prosecutor N Ramesh sought time to file a counter affidavit.

Arrest was made on June 14 in cash for job case

The case was again adjourned and his remand extended till February 7 after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed its counter affidavit. Meanwhile, after hearing detailed arguments from both the sides, the judge reserved the order till February 15 on the petition filed by Balaji to adjourn the hearing of the case. ED had arrested him on June 14 in a case related to cash for job. This matter dates back to the time of the previous AIADMK government when Balaji was the Transport Minister.

Right after his arrest, Balaji underwent bypass surgery at a private hospital. The remand kept being extended by the court from time to time. In August, ED had filed a 3000-page chargesheet against Balaji. The Madras High Court had rejected the bail plea filed by Balaji on October 19. His previous bail pleas were rejected twice by the Principal Sessions Judge. (input language)
