Madurai:Floods have caused huge devastation in Tamil Nadu. Defense personnel have started rescue efforts with the help of helicopters to save railway passengers stranded in the flood affected area of ​​southern Tamil Nadu. To rescue the stranded people at Srivaikuntam Railway Station, ropes and necessary accessories were lowered from the helicopter and several passengers, including a boy, were rescued and brought in the helicopter.

800 passengers stranded due to flood

“Rescue operations have started, passengers are being evacuated,” a Southern Railway official said. Food packets dropped from an Indian Air Force helicopter have been distributed to passengers by Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel. . Various arrangements including buses have been made to take the passengers to Vanchi Maniyachchi Railway Station, 38 km from Srivaikuntam. A special train will be operated from Vanchi Maniyachchi station to Chennai. Around 800 travelers are stranded in Srivaikuntam near Thoothukudi and Tiruchendur due to floods.

Rain stopped in most parts

Although rains have almost stopped in most parts of southern Tamil Nadu, people are still facing problems due to the effects of floods. A railway official said that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Air Force, Railways and local administration are making coordinated efforts for rescue operations. The stranded passengers spent the night in train coaches at Srivaikuntam railway station since the early hours of Monday. 300 people were sheltered in a nearby school and others were at Srivaikuntam railway station.

200 boats also deployed

Chief Minister MK Stalin, who is in Delhi, held an online meeting with ministers and district magistrates of Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tenkasi on Monday night and asked them to speed up the rescue operations. Additional pumps have been sent from Chennai to remove flood water in the southern districts and about 200 boats have also been deployed as part of the rescue operation. Let us inform you that extremely heavy rains have been recorded in 39 areas of southern Tamil Nadu. Heavy to very heavy rainfall was observed over Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts and light to moderate rainfall was observed at most places over southern Tamil Nadu.
