Thiruvananthapuram: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday said he is ready to contest from Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat for the fourth time in 2024, which could be his last election and he will win under any circumstances, even if Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands against him. Lets do it. Tharoor said this while participating in a discussion on his future plans on a TV channel. He said, “I am ready to contest elections from here again, but the final decision will be taken by the party and if I am asked, I will contest.” Tharoor said, this will be my last contest for the Lok Sabha.

‘When I contested elections for the first time, my desire was to become the Foreign Minister’

To a question about speculations about Prime Minister Narendra Modi contesting the elections from Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor said, “Even if Modi contests against me, I will win.” He said, “I am contesting the elections on the basis of my record and if people think so then they have every right to change me, but it will not be based on who I am contesting with. When I contested the elections for the first time So my desire was to become the foreign minister, which did not happen, now it is for the people to decide.” When asked if he was interested in contesting elections for the Kerala Assembly, he said, “At the moment my focus is on the Lok Sabha elections and depending on the circumstances at that time, I will consider it.”

Tharoor completes hat-trick of victory

Former Under-Secretary-General at the United Nations, Tharoor was a surprise choice when he came to India and secured the party ticket to contest the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Thiruvananthapuram after meeting top officials of the then Congress. Since then he has completed a hat-trick of wins and the only tough time he had to face was the untimely death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar in a luxurious hotel in Delhi in 2014.

Tharoor’s working style as a Lok Sabha member was completely different from that of ordinary Congress MPs. In the 2019 elections, he won by a margin of 99,989 votes, while in 2014 the margin was 15,470 and in his first election in 2009, the margin was 99,998 votes.
