Mandya: Tension is increasing over the removal of ‘Hanuman flag’ from the 108 feet high flagpole in Mandya, Karnataka. Meanwhile, the Gram Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) of Keragodu village in Mandya district has been suspended for giving the opportunity to hoist the flag. Mandya District Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Tanveer Asif, in an order issued on Monday, said that permission was given only to hoist the Indian flag in Keragodu village. The order said that the PDO not only gave the people a chance to hoist the Hanuman flag but also did not take any step to remove it.

BJP and JDS demonstrated

On January 28, the Panchayat Sub-Divisional Officer, along with the Tehsildar and police officials, removed the flag, which created a law and order problem and the PDO was held responsible for it. Opposition BJP and its ally JDS staged massive protests in Mandya against the removal of the Hanuman flag and demanding its re-installation, leading to increased security on Monday. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah accused the opposition BJP and JDS of trying to instigate people over the issue in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The police had resorted to mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd in Keragodu village on Sunday. Later, in the presence of administration officials, the national flag was hoisted in place of the Hanuman flag. Holding saffron flags, the protesters marched with slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ on Monday, covering a distance of about 14 kilometers from Keragodu to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in the district headquarters of Mandya. They also raised slogans against the Congress government. The protesters included BJP leaders CT Ravi and Pritam Gowda and JDS leaders Suresh Gowda and K. Food donors were included.

According to official sources, as the march reached Mandya city, police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd as some workers allegedly tried to pull down a flex board bearing the photograph of CM Siddaramaiah and other Congress leaders. of. Later, a large number of protesters gathered near the Deputy Commissioner’s office where a large number of police were deployed and barricades were erected. Ravi and JDS leaders, including former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, addressed the crowd.
