Uttarkashi: 40 lives trapped in the tunnel, food sent through pipe… When will the workers come out?

All workers trapped in Yamunotri Tunnel are safe

The rescue operation has intensified to rescue the workers trapped in the tunnel under construction between Silkyara and Dandalgaon on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. The work of removing debris from this tunnel being built on Yamunotri Highway is going on. It is expected that some good news may come by this evening, the rescue team may reach the workers trapped in the tunnel. Out of the 60 meters of debris that was filled inside the tunnel, 20 meters of debris has been removed. The remaining debris of forty meters can also be removed by late evening today. Contact has been made with the workers trapped in the tunnel through walkie-talkie. The workers have told that they are safe.

Contact has been made with the workers trapped in the tunnel through walkie-talkie. The workers have told that they are safe. Food packets are being sent to the workers through pipes. This pipe was laid inside the tunnel to supply water, now it is being used to send food packets. The work of establishing communication with the workers is also being done through this pipeline. First, a slip of message written on paper was sent through the pipeline to send a message to the laborer trapped in the tunnel. Later, packets of gram for food were also sent through the same pipeline.

Workers likely to leave by this evening

On one hand, work of removing debris is going on, while on the other hand, work of laying pipes is also being done at the other end of the tunnel. NDRF is trying to lay a 900 mm steel pipe to rescue 40 workers trapped inside the tunnel. If success is achieved in laying this pipe to the other end of the debris, then all the workers can be evacuated immediately. This pipe will be two and a half to three feet wide. If this steel pipe reaches inside, the people trapped inside will be able to be rescued safely without removing the debris. Disaster Management Secretary Ranjit Sinha said that everyone can be evacuated by tonight or day after tomorrow morning.

How many laborers are from which state?

Of the 40 laborers trapped inside the tunnel, 15 are from Jharkhand. 8 are from Uttar Pradesh, 5 from Odisha, 4 from Bihar, 3 from West Bengal and apart from them, 2 laborers each are from Uttarakhand, Assam and one laborer is from Himachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself has taken complete information about this incident. The central government is helping in every way, they hope that everyone will be evacuated safely.

At 2:30 last night, trucks laden with 900 mm diameter pipes from Haridwar and Dehradun reached the incident site in Silkyara.

  1. 900 mm diameter pipes arrived at the site.
  2. Auger drilling machine has reached the site.
  3. The platform for the auger machine has been prepared.
  4. The work of installation of Auger drilling machine is in progress.
  5. Dirt has been removed from a 21 meter stretch and shotcreting is being done in the open area.
  6. According to NHIDCL, all the stranded employees are safe.
