We are not against EVMs but against the manipulation in them – Jairam Ramesh – India TV Hindi

New Delhi: Lok Sabha elections have been declared. The elections will start from April 19 and continue till June 1. Counting of votes will take place on June 4 and the results will be declared on the same day. Before the elections, a meeting of India Alliance parties was held in Delhi. This meeting was done regarding election strategy. After this meeting, Congress said on Sunday that it is not against electronic voting machines (EVMs) but against their manipulation.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the party demands 100 per cent counting of VVPAT slips to ensure the credibility of the voting system. The party is not demanding re-use of ballot papers but wants 100 per cent counting of ‘Voter Verifiable Paper Audit’ (VVPAT) slips to restore voter confidence.

Jairam Ramesh said, “During the meeting of the ‘India’ alliance held on December 19, 2023, all the parties said that we are not against EVMs, but against manipulation in it. We are not asking to go back to the ballot papers, we just request 100 per cent counting and tallying of VVPATs.” He also said that the opposition parties will approach the Election Commission to present their stand on 100 per cent counting of VVPATs. They are asking for time, but the Commission is not giving them time.

Questions on the intentions of the Election Commission

Questioning the intentions of the Election Commission, the Congress leader said, “We will present our documents in support of our claims before the Election Commission and put forward our demands.” We want free and fair elections. Why is the Commission afraid, and is it not even meeting us in this regard? Earlier on Saturday, during the press conference held after the announcement of the election schedule, the Chief Election Commissioner was asked questions on the same allegations by the opposition parties. They went. In response to this, Rajiv Kumar had said that there is no problem in EVM.

Opposition leaders are being intimidated by misusing these agencies. They are being threatened to either come with us or be ready to go to jail.
