Kolkata: A report published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) states that Kolkata is the safest city in the country. Kolkata has emerged as the safest city in India for the third consecutive year, with the lowest number of cognizable crimes per lakh population among metros. According to NCRB data, Kolkata recorded 86.5 cases of cognizable crime per lakh people in 2022, followed by Pune (280.7) and Hyderabad (299.2). Cognizable offenses are those for which cases are registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and SLL (Special and Local Laws).

According to the NCRB report, 103.4 cases of cognizable crime per lakh people were registered in Kolkata in 2021, which decreased to 86.5 this year. The count in 2020 was 129.5. In 2021, Pune and Hyderabad recorded 256.8 and 259.9 cognizable crimes per lakh population, respectively. The ranking was released after a comparison between 19 cities with a population of more than 20 lakh. However, Kolkata recorded a rise in crimes against women as the number of cases increased from 1,783 in 2021 to 1,890 in 2022, the NCRB report said.
Kolkata is the safest city
The crime rate against women in Kolkata was 27.1 per lakh population, higher than Coimbatore’s 12.9 and Chennai’s 17.1. This year, the eastern metropolis also saw a decline in violent crimes and recorded only 34 murder cases, down from 45 last year. According to the report, 11 rape cases were registered in Kolkata in 2022, the same number were registered in 2021. The NCRB report ‘Crime in India 2022’ is based on data collected from 36 states and union territories and central agencies.
