In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, DMK’s Dayanidhi Maran won from Chennai Central Lok Sabha seat of Tamil Nadu by 3,01,520 votes. PMK’s S. R. Sam Paul stood second. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, AIADMK’s S. R. Vijay had won over senior DMK leader and former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran by more than 45 thousand votes. S. R. Vijay was elected MP from this seat for the first time in 2014. Before this, Dayanidhi Maran had been elected MP from the seat twice.

The Chennai Central seat was earlier known as Madras Central. The Chennai Central seat came into existence before the Lok Sabha elections held in 1977. After this seat came into existence, Lok Sabha elections have been held here 12 times between 1977 and 2019. It is one of the smallest Lok Sabha constituencies in India. Since then, this seat has been won by DMK 8 times, Congress 3 times and for the first time in 2014, an AIADMK candidate has won.

According to the 2011 census, the total population of Chennai Central parliamentary constituency is 16,31,196, which is 100 per cent urban population. Here the Scheduled Caste (SC) population is 17.84 percent and the Scheduled Tribe (ST) population is 0.29 percent.
