Kottayam: A ‘secular’ party may soon merge with the Bharatiya Janata Party. In fact, former Kerala MLA P. C. George indicated on Tuesday that the Kerala Janapakasam (Secular) Party led by him is likely to merge with the BJP. Speaking to the media in Kerala, George said that the ‘general sentiment’ of his party workers is in favor of joining BJP and a decision in this regard will be taken before the Lok Sabha elections. He said that if such a decision is taken, it will not be a merger ‘because our party is very small and it will be like a small stream joining a river.’

George has been MLA for more than 30 years

George, who represented Poonjar seat in the Kerala Assembly for more than 30 years, praised the leadership of Narendra Modi and said that India had never had such an efficient Prime Minister. He said that the opinion among our party workers is that PM Modi should be supported. When asked whether he would contest the Lok Sabha elections if he joins the BJP, he said, “If the BJP asks me to contest the elections, I will contest, if not, I will not contest.”

Won the first assembly election in 1982

George, a 7-time former MLA representing Poonjar constituency in Kottayam district, represented the Kerala Legislative Assembly for a total of 33 years from 1982 to 1987 and 1996 to 2022. He was associated with various political parties such as Kerala Congress, Kerala Congress (Joseph), Kerala Congress (Mani) and Kerala Congress (Secular) before forming his own party Kerala Janapakasam (Secular) after the 2016 assembly elections.

Also served as Chief Whip of Kerala Assembly

During his political career, George held positions like Chief Whip of the Kerala Assembly from 2011 to 2015 when the United Democratic Front (UDF) government was in power. He later founded his own party in 2017. George had lost the election in his stronghold Poonjar area to the Left Democratic Front candidate in a triangular contest in the 2021 assembly elections.
