Kovind started brainstorming on ‘one nation, one election’

Former President Ram Nath Kovind, head of the high-level committee formed for ‘One Nation, One Election’, has started discussions with former Chief Election Commissioners (CEC) and retired judges on the issue of holding simultaneous elections. Their meetings come days after the committee sought public opinion on the issue. Kovind met former Chief Justice of Madras High Court Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari on Wednesday. “Continuing the deliberations this afternoon, the Chairman of the High Level Committee held discussions with Justice Gorla Rohini, former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, and former CEC Sushil Chandra,” an official statement said.

Former Chief Election Commissioner supported

Law Secretary Niten Chandra was also present when former CEC Sushil Chandra and Justice Rohini met Ramnath Kovind. Chandra is also the secretary of the high level committee. It said that the consultation process will continue in the coming days. Sources said Chandra supported the idea of holding simultaneous elections, saying it would help in better governance as governments would get more time to formulate and implement policies. He is also understood to have said that holding simultaneous elections would reduce public inconvenience, improve the utilization of human resources and reduce the expenditure incurred on repeated elections.

Ideas were sought from the public and political parties

Let us tell you that this committee has already sought suggestions from the general public and political parties on this issue and has considered them. At the same time, eminent jurists including former Chief Justices of the Supreme Court and High Courts, constitutional experts and former CEC have also been contacted to seek their views on this matter. Since its formation in September last year, the committee has held two meetings so far.

It had recently written to political parties seeking their opinion on the idea of holding simultaneous elections and asked for talks on a “mutually agreed date”. The committee later sent a reminder to the parties. Under this, letters were sent to 6 national parties, 33 state level parties and 7 registered unrecognized parties. The committee has also heard the views of the Law Commission on holding simultaneous elections. Opinion can be taken again from the Law Commission on this issue.
