Chhath Mahaparva will begin tomorrow with Nahay Khay. On this day, fasting people consume satvik food. Such things are included in the food which will reduce hunger and thirst on the day of fasting. On the day of Nahay Khay, vegetables are prepared without onion and garlic. Making gourd and pumpkin vegetable has special significance on this day. In Nahay Khay, gourd and gram dal is eaten with rice. Due to this, there is no shortage of water in the body and the body starts getting ready for the fast. Know why gourd and gram dal vegetable is made during Chhath and what is its recipe?

Why do we eat gourd and gram dal in Nahay Khay?

During the fast of Chhath, great care is taken of purity. Bottle gourd is considered satvik among vegetables. Bottle gourd is easy to digest and contains good amount of water. Due to which the body gets energy. Bottle gourd is rich in vitamins which help in preparing the body for fasting. Whereas gram dal is considered to be the purest of pulses. This makes it easier to eat rice and also keeps the stomach full for a long time.

Make gourd gram dal vegetable on Chhath

  1. Wash 1 bottle gourd, peel it thoroughly and cut it into medium sized pieces.
  2. Wash and clean half a bowl of chana dal and soak it in water for some time.
  3. Finely chop 1 tomato and chop 2 green chillies and half a bowl of green coriander
  4. Take one piece of ginger, 1 spoon of cumin, 1 spoon of asafoetida and 2 pieces of cinnamon.
  5. Now add ghee or any pure oil in the cooker and when hot, add cumin, asafoetida and cinnamon.
  6. Now add ginger, chopped green chillies and tomatoes and fry.
  7. Add turmeric powder, red chilli, dry coriander and rock salt to it and fry the tomatoes.
  8. Now add gram dal and bottle gourd and mix, adjust the gravy as per your requirement and add water.
  9. Switch off the cooker and let it cook for about 3-4 whistles on medium flame and release the pressure.
  10. Now take out the vegetable, garnish it with green coriander and eat it with rice or roti.
