Shardul Thakur gave a big statement on Ranji Trophy
Shardul Thakur: Ranji Trophy is the biggest tournament of Indian domestic cricket. Semi-final matches are currently being played in this tournament. The teams of Mumbai and Tamil Nadu are face to face in the second semi-final match of Ranji Trophy 2024. In the first innings of this match, Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur scored a brilliant century. But in the meantime he has given a big statement regarding the schedule of Ranji Trophy.
Shardul Thakur’s big statement on Ranji Trophy schedule
Shardul Thakur on Sunday said that the BCCI (Indian Cricket Board) will have to rethink next year’s Ranji Trophy schedule as playing 10 matches in just three days can lead to injuries to the players. Thakur said it would be difficult for the players to adjust to the three-day gap between knockout matches as this was not the case earlier. Thakur told the media that it is very difficult because we are playing first-class matches in a span of three days which has never happened before in a Ranji Trophy season. The program is becoming more and more difficult. If players continue playing like this for two more seasons, many players in the country will get injured. Next year BCCI will have to reconsider this and give more breaks.
The schedule changed a lot compared to before
Shardul Thakur said that a few years ago players used to get a lot of days off between Ranji Trophy matches. He said that I remember my days of playing Ranji Trophy, seven-eight years ago, there was a break of three days each in the first three matches, then a break of four days each and the knockouts were played on a break of five days. This year we saw that there is a gap of three days between all the matches. If the team reaches the finals, it is very difficult to expect the domestic players to play 10 matches in a span of just three days.
He further said that also when there were nine teams in the group, one team got a break in the round robin system. Now there are only eight teams in a group and each plays each other, so this break is also over now. Thakur agreed that the current schedule does not allow a fast bowler enough time to recover. He said that absolutely 100 percent because Mohit Awasthi got injured in the sixth match itself. He had played five consecutive matches and there was a lot of burden on him because Tushar Deshpande was selected for India A and he was not available. Dhawal Kulkarni was playing except one match as per his age and workload. Royston Dias is the new player.
