Sumit Nagal’s journey in Australian Open ends, defeated by Chinese player in second round

In the Australian Open 2024, Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal made a great start by defeating the world number 27 player in the first round. Nagal had to face defeat from the Chinese player in the second round and his journey ended in the first Grand Slam of the year. Nagal was defeated 3-1 by Chinese player Juncheng Shang in a four-set match. Earlier, Nagal had entered the second round of Australian Open for the first time in his tennis career by defeating Alexander Bublik in the first round. However, in the second round, he faced a tough competition from the young player from China in which he could not succeed in winning.

Lost three consecutive sets after winning the first set

Sumit Nagal made a great start against Chinese player Juncheng Shang in the second round of Australian Open, in which he won the first set 6-2. After this, Nagal looked a little tired and the Chinese player took full advantage of this in which Juncheng Shang won the second set by 6-3 and had to face defeat in the third set also by 7-5. Nagal tried to make a comeback in the deciding set of this match but he had to face defeat 6-4. Now Chinese player Juncheng Shang, who has entered the third round of Australian Open, will face world number 2 player Carlos Alcaraz.

Sumit Nagal did this feat after 35 years

Even though Nagal was eliminated in the first Grand Slam of the year after losing in the second round, but after 35 years, this is the first time in the history of Indian tennis that an Indian male tennis player defeated a seeded player in the singles Grand Slam. Sumit Nagal reached the main draw by defeating Alex Molkan (Slovakia) 6-4, 6-4 in the final of the qualifying round of the tournament.
