Russia attacked Ukraine’s hydropower plant (file)
Kyiv: Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine after Putin came back to power. This week Russia has launched the second biggest attack on Ukraine. Russian forces this time attacked power facilities in several parts of the country, including Ukraine’s largest hydropower plant, causing a large-scale power outage in several cities. At least three people died due to these attacks. Officials gave this information on Friday. Ukraine’s Energy Minister German Galushchenko said the nighttime drone and rocket attacks were “the most recent attacks on the Ukrainian energy sector” aimed not only at causing damage but, as in the past year, at disrupting the country’s energy system. The attacks caused a fire at the Dnipro Hydroelectric Plant, which supplies electricity to the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power installation. A dam breach could not only disrupt supplies to the nuclear plant but also threaten severe flooding, as happened last year when a major dam at Kakhovka below the Dnieper collapsed. Zaporozhye regional governor Ivan Fedorov said one person was killed and at least eight were injured in the Russian attack. Attacks on energy facilities in the Kharkiv region caused power outages and attacks were also carried out in areas of western Ukraine. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, two people died in the Khmelnitsky region.
Zelensky issued message on Telegram after the attack
“The world clearly sees the targets of Russian terrorists which include power plants and energy supply lines, a hydroelectric dam, ordinary residential buildings, even a building,” Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said on the Telegram app on Friday.
