India has given a befitting reply to America’s comments on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The Ministry of External Affairs clearly said that CAA is India’s internal matter and America’s comment on it is inappropriate. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 is an internal matter of India and the United States’ statement on its implementation is incorrect. Therefore, it is inappropriate to make any kind of wrong comment on this matter.

Randhir Jaiswal said “As you are well aware that CAA 2019 is an internal matter of India and it has been brought in keeping with India’s inclusive traditions and long-term commitment towards human rights. This Act applies to the countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Grants a safe haven to persecuted minorities of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities who have entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

CAA is for giving, not for taking away citizenship.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that CAA is for giving citizenship, not for taking it away. Therefore this point should be underlined. This Act provides human dignity and supports human rights. As far as the US State Department statement on the implementation of CAA is concerned and the comments made by many others are completely based on misinformation and also unwarranted. He said that the Constitution of India guarantees religious freedom to all its citizens.

No grounds for concern for minorities

The Foreign Ministry said that there is no basis for any concern or behavior towards minorities. Vote bank politics should not dictate consideration of a laudable initiative to help people in distress. There should be no attempt to lecture those who have limited understanding of India’s pluralistic traditions and the post-partition history of the region. “India’s partners and well-wishers should welcome the intention with which this step has been taken.”
