Tokyo: Japan has issued a tsunami warning after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the northeastern region, AP reports. According to reports, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck north central Japan on Monday, the first day of the new year. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama prefectures. The quake’s epicenter was 40 centimeters away from Kashiwaki city in Niigata prefecture, NHK reported. Hokuriku Electric Power said it was investigating any irregularities at its nuclear power plants, according to the report.

Japan issued a tsunami warning on Monday after a series of earthquakes struck western areas. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported earthquakes in Ishikawa and surrounding prefectures, one of which measured a preliminary magnitude of 7.4. Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV warned that swells could reach up to 5 meters (16.5 ft) after tsunami and urged people to flee to higher ground or to the top of a nearby building as quickly as possible. .
