Preparations begin for presidential elections in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka: Elections have come in India. Election preparations are going on on a large scale. Various parties are gearing up for the election campaign. The promotion has started. Elections were recently held in the neighboring country Pakistan also. Shahbaz government took oath. Whereas Asif Ali Zardari became the President. Now preparations for the election for the post of President have started in Sri Lanka. President Wickremesinghe has instructed the Cabinet to prepare for the presidential elections.

According to the information received, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed his cabinet to prepare for the presidential elections to be held at the end of this year. This direction has been given at a time when the cash-strapped country is trying to recover from its worst economic crisis. The Election Commission has to announce the next presidential election by September and conduct the voting by mid-November. Parliament’s term will end in August 2025, but President Wickremesinghe has the power to dissolve the 225-member assembly elected in August 2020 and call elections at any time.

Wickremesinghe announced after the cabinet meeting

News portal ‘Daily Mirror’, quoting sources, said on Tuesday that ending the speculation, Wickremesinghe announced during the cabinet meeting on Monday that presidential elections would be held first and directed to prepare for the elections. Citing the Constitution, 74-year-old Wickremesinghe said presidential elections should be held first and arrangements would be made accordingly.

Sri Lanka is facing economic crisis

This will be the first election in 2022 after Sri Lanka is plunged into a serious economic crisis. The economically distressed country is facing acute shortage of essential commodities like food and fuel and could be declared bankrupt. There were massive protests in the country after the bankruptcy was declared. Because of this, the then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had to flee the country and ultimately resign from his post. Wickremesinghe was elected to the post through voting in Parliament after Gotabaya resigns as President in 2022. He will complete the remaining term of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, which will end in November this year.
