On January 5, a motion was passed in the upper house of parliament to postpone the elections citing cold weather and security concerns. The proposal moved by Senator Dilawar Khan received overwhelming support in the Senate, but major political parties termed it “unconstitutional”.
Only 14 out of 100 MPs were present
It was passed in the presence of only 14 MPs out of 100 MPs of the Senate. In a statement on Monday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said it had deliberated on the proposal. According to a report in Pakistani newspaper, ‘Dawn’, the Election Commission said that all necessary arrangements have been made for the elections and the general elections will be held on February 8.

The Election Commission further said, ‘It would not be inappropriate to mention here that earlier also, general elections and local elections have been held in the winter season. It would not be appropriate for the Election Commission to postpone the general elections.
