Dhaka: Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina has secured her fourth consecutive term. His party, the Awami League, won two-thirds of the seats in the elections held amid sporadic incidents of violence and a boycott by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies. Hasina’s party has won 200 seats in the 300-member Parliament.

Sheikh Hasina’s fifth term

Election Commission spokesperson said, “We can call Awami League the winner based on the results available so far, but the final announcement will be made after the counting of votes in the remaining constituencies is over.” Hasina again won the Gopalganj-3 parliamentary seat. Registered a spectacular victory. He got 2,49,965 votes, while his nearest rival M Nizam Uddin Lashkar of Bangladesh Supreme Party got only 469 votes. The reins of power in Bangladesh are in the hands of Hasina since 2009. This time she is going to get the fourth consecutive term in a one-sided election. This will be his fifth term as Prime Minister so far.

People rejected election boycott

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Qadir claimed that people have rejected the election boycott of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami by voting. Qadir said, “I thank those who braved the fear of vandalism, arson and terrorism to vote in the 12th National Parliamentary Elections.” While Jatiya Party President G. M. Qadir won the Rangpur-3 seat in the elections. Chief Election Commissioner Qazi Habibul Awal said that according to initial estimates, the turnout was around 40 percent, but this figure may change. The overall voter turnout in the 2018 general elections was more than 80 percent.

BNP called the results fake

BNP, which boycotted the general elections held on Sunday, has termed it as ‘fake’. BNP had boycotted the 2014 elections but it contested the 2018 elections. Along with this, 15 other political parties also boycotted the elections. Party leaders have claimed that the low turnout in the elections makes it clear that their boycott movement was successful. He said that peaceful democratic protest programs will gain momentum and this will establish people’s right to vote.

Voting will be held later on one seat

Earlier, an Election Commission spokesperson said that apart from some isolated incidents of violence, polling was largely peaceful in 299 constituencies out of 300. Voting for one seat will be conducted later due to the death of a candidate. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina cast her vote at the Dhaka City College polling station soon after the polling began. During this time his daughter Saima Wajid was also with him. He alleged that the opposition BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami alliance does not believe in democracy. He said, “People will vote as per their wish and we were able to create an atmosphere of voting. However, the BNP-Jamaat alliance carried out several incidents including arson.
