Israeli army’s havoc in Gaza.
A period of horrific massacre continues between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. A large number of Palestinian civilians are also being killed. Since the ceasefire, the Israeli army has again started wreaking havoc on Gaza. Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in this so far. America has also expressed concern over the deaths of ordinary Palestinians. According to a report, the number of people killed in Gaza due to the Israel-Hamas war has crossed 17,700, of which about two-thirds are women and children. The Health Ministry gave this information in the Hamas controlled area.
Israel intensified airstrikes and shelling in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday. The strikes came a day after the US vetoed a UN resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on humanitarian grounds, even though it was supported by a majority of Security Council members and several other countries. In the total 15-member Council, 13 votes were cast in favor of the proposal and one against it, while Britain abstained. Israel said that 97 of its soldiers were killed in ground operations following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7. Hamas’ October 7 attack killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 240 hostage.
Houthi rebels gave new threat
Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have threatened to block every vessel sailing from the Red Sea and Arabian Sea to Israeli ports unless they ensure uninterrupted supplies of food and medicine to Gaza. Houthi rebels have attacked several ships in the Red Sea in past weeks and launched drone and missile attacks targeting Israel. Minor humanitarian aid is reaching a small part of Gaza. Despite increasing international pressure, the administration of US President Joe Biden is opposing the ceasefire. His argument is that because of this, Hamas will remain a threat to Israel.
America approves sale of arms worth US$106 million to Israel
The US State Department said the administration has approved the emergency sale of approximately 14,000 rounds of tank ammunition to Israel, valued at more than US$106 million. The International Rescue Committee and seven other aid agencies have called on the UN Security Council to pass a resolution ensuring an immediate ceasefire and the release of those held hostage by Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz discussed the ground offensive in southern Gaza on phone on Saturday. Scholz’s office gave this information. The statement said Scholz “stressed that more humanitarian aid must reach the people in the Gaza Strip and this must be done on a credible basis”.
