Islamabad: The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), backed by former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, made a big bet in the presidential elections on Saturday. SIC fielded Pushtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai as its presidential candidate against PML-N and PPP’s joint candidate Asif Ali Zardari in the presidential elections. According to Pakistani media, 75-year-old Achakzai has been made a candidate for this post against senior leader of Pakistan People’s Party i.e. PPP and former President Asif Ali Zardari.

Imran appealed to vote for Achakzai

Zardari, 68, is a joint candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and other political parties in the alliance to form the government at the Centre. Pashtunkha Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) Chief Achakzai has won the National Assembly seat from NA-266 constituency in Kila Abdullah-cum-Chaman, Balochistan. According to reports, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, has urged his party’s MPs to vote for Achakzai. PTI Chairman Barrister Gauhar Khan has confirmed Achakzai’s nomination for the presidential election.

Presidential elections will be held in Pakistan on March 9.

A party delegation led by PTI leader Asad Qaiser had met Achakzai and Balochistan National Party (Mengal) chief Akhtar Mengal earlier this week to seek support in raising voice against ‘rigging’ in the last general elections. During the meeting, Achakzai stressed the supremacy of the Constitution and his party’s support for every political party working towards empowering Parliament. According to a notification issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday, the election for the post of President is scheduled to be held on March 9. Zardari’s nomination papers for the presidential election will be filed on Saturday. (Language)
