He said that every woman running a household has to face this challenge. Kim said at the event, ‘Preventing the decline in the birth rate and taking good care of children are the duties of all mothers, which we have to handle even while working.’

The situation is worse in North Korea’s neighboring countries

The United Nations Population Fund estimates that the birth rate in North Korea is continuously declining. This rate has reached its lowest level in recent decades. By the year 2023, the average number of children born to a woman in North Korea was 1.8. Although this is slightly higher than its neighboring countries, which are already struggling with the falling birth rate of children. China, Japan and South Korea are prominent among the countries struggling with declining fertility rates. China is not even getting new recruits to join its country’s army. South Korea’s fertility rate fell to a record low of 0.78 last year, while in Japan the figure fell to 1.26.

North Korea is also struggling with food shortage

North Korea, with a population of about 25 million people, has also suffered from severe food shortages in recent decades. This also includes the deadly famine in the 1990s. Crops in North Korea are often damaged as a result of natural disasters such as floods. The North Korean leader thanked mothers for their role in strengthening national power.

China is also troubled by the decreasing birth rate

Not only North Korea, China is also troubled by the decreasing birth rate in their country. Chinese President Xi Jinping himself has expressed great concern in this matter. In China, young couples are being appealed to get married and give birth to children. China had started a campaign to give birth to a child a decade ago, when the number of youth started decreasing, they withdrew this campaign a few years ago. Now China wants the birth rate to increase. Young people in China also avoid marriage because of their career. For this reason youth are being encouraged to get married.
