The government of Maldives has suspended three of its ministers, including Mariam Shiuna, for making ‘derogatory’ remarks on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Muizzu government has taken this strict action against three of its ministers – including Mariam Shiuna, Malsha and Hassan Jihan – for making indecent remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his visit to Lakshadweep, Maldives’ local media Atoll Times reported.
Earlier, the Maldives government had issued a statement clarifying its stand on Minister Mariam Shiuna’s comments on PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep. Maldives have said they will not hesitate to take action against those making such “derogatory remarks” after the country suddenly saw a huge surge in cancellations of tourists from India following its minister’s comments on PM Modi. In a statement on Sunday, the Maldives’ Foreign Ministry said they were aware of “derogatory comments on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals”. Last week, a controversy broke out on social media when a Maldivian minister, Mariyam Shiuna, and some other leaders made derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Modi after he posted a video of him at a pristine beach in Lakshadweep.
