Currently, the Indian government is planning to seal other open places on the international border as well. After this, it will become easier for the security forces to stop infiltration. At present, it has been decided to install this fencing on the open border of India-Myanmar.
This big decision of the Modi government has been welcomed by the Meitei organizations of Manipur. Naga and Kuki organizations said that “this decision is not acceptable to them.” Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in a post on ‘X’ on Tuesday that the Narendra Modi government is committed to making the borders “impenetrable”. Is. “It has been decided to erect fencing along the entire 1,643 km long India-Myanmar border,” he said. A patrolling route will also be built on the border for better surveillance.” This move could end the ‘Free Movement Regime’ (FMR) prevalent on the India-Myanmar border.
People living near the border will get this facility
Under the FMR, people living near the India-Myanmar border are allowed to travel up to 16 kilometers into each other’s territory without any documents. Manipur shares at least 398 km of border with Myanmar, of which 10 km has already been fenced. The Coordinating Committee of Civil Society Organizations (COCOMI) welcomed the decision to erect fencing along the India-Myanmar border but cautioned that no land area of the state should be compromised during the process. “If this (border fencing) had been done 30-40 years ago, there would not have been the violence that we are seeing today,” said M. Dhananjay, COCOMI’s assistant media coordinator. This has led to large-scale drug trafficking which is threatening the lives of the youth and the influx of illegal refugees has led to major demographic changes which are threatening the Meitei and Naga indigenous population of the state.
Drug smuggling will stop with infiltration
Dhananjay said, “The border should be sealed by fencing. We welcome it but it should be done in such a way that no land area of the state is lost.” The Meitei group of Imphal Valley has been continuously demanding fencing of the border. They allege that tribal militants often enter India through the open border. Meitei groups also allege that drugs are being smuggled into India by taking advantage of the unfenced international border. However, Naga organizations in the state have expressed concern over the development and said the border fencing and cancellation of FMR is “not acceptable” to them.
N. Lorho, president of the state’s top Naga organization United Naga Council (UNC), told PTI, “We are against fencing the border and revoking the FMR. Whatever the Union Minister has said is not acceptable to the UNC.” He said, ”As far as the issue of drug trafficking and illegal refugees from Myanmar to Manipur is concerned, we are asking the Union Home Minister for alternative solutions and ways to deal with them. Meanwhile, Kuki organizations also “opposed” the fencing along the India-Myanmar border. Kuki Inpi Manipur had said in January that “sudden” fencing would not solve the “complex challenges”.
