Jakarta: Former General Prabowo Subianto, who won the presidential election in Indonesia, has come under public target even before taking oath. Protesters in the capital Jakarta held a massive march against Prabowo Subianto on Friday, demanding the top election body block Prabowo Subianto from assuming office as the next president in the wake of widespread election fraud. Former General Subianto, who was accused of human rights violations in the past, claimed victory in the presidential election on Wednesday.
According to unofficial figures, he got more than 58 percent of the votes in the three-way election. Subianto’s victory has not yet been formally declared, as it could take up to a month for official results to be released. His two rivals, former governors Anees Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, refused to concede defeat and alleged massive rigging in the election. Authorities had blocked roads leading to the heavily guarded Election Commission building, which has been cordoned off with fencing.

Dozens of protesters carried banners criticizing President Joko Widodo for supporting Subianto. The Subyantons had chosen Widodo’s son as their vice president. “We are demanding justice, we are demanding transparent vote counting,” said Siti Aisyah, who was among the protesters. Don’t let them win by fraud, they will destroy our country’s democracy again.” Baswedan and Pranovo’s campaign team said they would provide evidence of their allegations of fraud. (AP)
