On the eve of its second anniversary, the US has announced more than 500 new sanctions against Russia. US President Joe Biden said in a statement that new sanctions have also been imposed due to the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in Russia’s Arctic region.
Washington claimed that the Russian government is responsible for Navalny’s death. The sanctions will target individuals linked to Navalny’s imprisonment, as well as Russia’s financial sector, defense industrial base, procurement networks and sanctions violators across multiple continents, Biden said. The new sanctions target Russia’s payments system, financial institutions and its military-industrial base, future energy production and other sectors. This has created a threat of global economic crisis.
A list of 200 pages has been released
America has released a 200-page list of sanctions. The thing to note is that names of companies and metal sector, more energy related punishment and banks related sectors are missing from this list. Russia’s RIA news agency quoted Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov as saying that the new sanctions are an attack on Russia’s core interests but that Moscow will continue to protect them.
Ban action on 300 people and institutions
On Friday, EU, Britain and Canada also took similar action against Russia. The US Treasury Department on Friday took action to ban nearly 300 people and entities, while the State Department banned more than 250 people and entities and the Commerce Department added more than 90 companies to the list.
Ban has already been imposed on many institutions
The list released by the American side on Friday also includes the names of those people and organizations which were banned earlier also. This list also includes the name of the warden of the jail where opposition leader Alexei Navalny died. Along with this, the Deputy Director of Federal Penitentiary Service has also been added to the list.
