Sheikh Hasina wins with huge majority in Bangladesh

Sheikh Hasina on India: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has won the general elections with an overwhelming majority. His party Awami League has got two-third majority out of 300. On this occasion, Sheikh Hasina expressed gratitude to the entire country for the victory. After the election victory, he said many important things while addressing the general public on Monday. Know what big thing he said about India?

A day after securing a landslide majority in the general elections, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said India is a “close friend” of Bangladesh and the two neighbors have resolved many problems bilaterally. Hasina-led Awami League party has won the general elections for the fourth consecutive time. The 76-year-old leader, who has been ruling the strategically important South Asian country since 2009, won her fifth term overall in the one-sided election held on Sunday. However, there were less votes cast in the election.

India is an integral friend of Bangladesh: Hasina

Hasina said, “India is a very close friend of Bangladesh. India supported us in 1971 and also in 1975. He gave shelter to me and my sister and other members of my family.” She was referring to her time in exile in India for six years after the murder of her family members. In August 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his wife and his three sons were assassinated by military officers in their home. His daughters Haseena and Rehana were saved as they were abroad.

We have good relations with every country, said Hasina

In response to a question, he said, “We consider India as our immediate neighbour. There were many problems between us, but we resolved it bilaterally. So, I really appreciate that we have a wonderful relationship with India.” Hasina said, “I have good relations with every country, because this is our motto.”

Roadmap told for the next five years

Prime Minister Hasina said that the main focus of her government in the next five years will be economic progress. She said that she tries to work for her people. “With motherly affection, I look after my people who gave me this opportunity. Time and again people have voted for me and that is why I am here,” she said. On being compared with global leaders like former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Hasina said, “They are very great women. I am not. I am very simple, just a common man.”
