Time was kind to former PM Nawaz Sharif, High Court acquitted him in two corruption cases.

Times have been kind to former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ever since his return to the country. The Islamabad High Court on Wednesday acquitted Nawaz Sharif in two corruption cases. This is the biggest relief for Nawaz. That too at a time when the former Prime Minister has returned to Pakistan after 4 years and is trying his best to become the PM again in the upcoming general elections. General elections are to be held in Pakistan in February. This decision coming just before that is no less than a big gift for Nawaz Sharif and his supporters.

Let us tell you that Nawaz was convicted in these cases in 2018. Sharif (73) had challenged his conviction in the Avenfield property and Al-Azizia cases in the Islamabad High Court. A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb pronounced the verdict after hearing arguments from both sides. Former Prime Minister Sharif was convicted in July 2018.

Nawaz was sentenced to 10 and 7 years

Nawaz was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Avenfield property corruption case related to disproportionate assets in London. Whereas in December 2018, he was sentenced to 7 years in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case. The cases were filed by the national anti-corruption watchdog, National Accountability Bureau (NAB). He had filed appeals against his conviction in both cases. Sharif had gone to London in 2019 and did not return and the Islamabad High Court had declared him a fugitive in both cases in December 2020. He returned home last month after nearly four years in self-imposed exile. (Language)
